10 Things Lacking

10 Things I Hate About You has been adapted from a Shakespearean Classic to a movie and now to a teen comedy/drama for ABC Family.
As much as I've been a disgrace to the blog of late, I'd have to say that this is shameful adaptation to the silverscreen. It'd been better off if they just left it in the nineties.

The writing is dreadfully dissapointing and the act is what'd you expect from an actress from Nickledeon. Maybe that's a bit harsh, everyone needs there break right? But if things continue as they have it will just be another teen drama that never really went anywhere. I just feel that there is so much potential but all they focus on is themes of perception--which is quite noble. Along with reputation, high school crush/love/lust, and popularity.

1.1 Pilot

Typical pilot we get introduced to the two sisters who have completely different goals and viewpoints in life. Along with the conflict and love interests are introduced. The rumors remain intact, such as the idea of Patrick Verona being this dangerous kid with a jaded past that everyone is afraid of, well everyone but Kat. They also recreate some of the classic scenes from the movie but with some minor changes. If you watch you can look forward to the party, car crash and a stare down.

1.2 I Want You To Want Me

This is epitome of how you feel in high school especially when there is some guy/girl that attracts you attention beyond your understanding. In this episode there's a carnation sale to raise money and Bianca simply worries if she'll even recieve one being the new girl and the undesireable mascot on the cheerleading squad. Even Kat, whose character is so above it all succumbs to desiring a caranation from a specific Pat V. Drama ensues when you discover her new bestie punches a guy for her (this is unknown to Kat) and of course when Bianca doesn't recieve her flowers because of Chastity the schools Queen B.

1.3 Won't Get Fooled Again
Bianca sneaks out after getting grounded and Kat lies to their crazed father, same one with crack whore stories and grotesque teen birth tales (Larry Miller), to go see her favorite band. Cameron is still insanely engrossed with Bianca and his puppy love, which she is oblivious to on their journey towards popularity and a party. Chemistry sparks between Kat and Patrick at the club before things get interrupted and she tells on herself for her desire to be seen as a flower rather than a cactus in her father's eyes and it leads to some obligatory sister bonding. Ultimately the both end up grounded, but I don't think I'd rat myself out for that. Stupid, right?

1.4 Don't Give a Damn About my Bad Reputation
Bianca needs something riske to hype her reputation at school and with the girls in the squad to shed her good-girl appearance--so what does she do. Tells everyone in an inadvertent way that she is dating an older guy. Which then turns into the hottie new math teacher at school. When rumors like these arise trouble ends up brewing with the authorities stepping in and the new hottie getting sent to jail. Cause, well it turns out that he was actually dating another student. While Kat spent her time unleashing both her rage (okay, actually a trash can and the quote "That's how the Earth feels") and curiosity on Patrick, she ends up in detention deflecting the idea that she might just be a little obsessed with him. Speaking from experience when a guy figures this out there is no end to it. Boys and their egos! Anywayz not too many consequences occur for the Stratford duo.

I've never really appreciated change, especially change for the sake of change and this show may be exactly why. While, I'll admit that Ethan Peck and Lindsey Shaw have the chemistry down pack, I do not appreciate the changes they made to one of my favorite characters. Kat Stratford was a slight misunderstood and disturbed teenage girl who was hiding and attempting to find herself with good reason. And now she's this insane political activists seeker who easily falls for the mysteries of Patrick. When in reality neither of the characters ever sought each other out nor displayed blatant affections or desires for one another. I guess in the end she still is the "shrew" that Shakespeare created just with outright rage and dark clothing to boot. I just feel that Kat is lacking that wittiness and Patrick is lacking his true charm; which currently consist of him being flirty with a new girl each week. They may have nailed Chastity and Bianca down but they still need to work on Kat. A lot has changed with this new California with the Stratford's but to leave you with a positive at least we'll get a chance to get a better look at Cameron and Mandella.

Heath :(

They never should have even attempted a show based on the movie! The movie doesn't need changing. It's one of my favorite "romantic teen comedies", and I normally HATE "romantic teen comedies".

That sounds weird that they changed the Kat character so much. Seems unnecessary. The guy playing Patrick looks hot though :)

Of course you know I agree. 10 things was brillant and therefore needs no changes; especially the awesomeness that was Kat's characte brought to life by Julia Stiles. PS I found out yesterday that they completely gutted the show of the singing scene with the bleachers. Which just makes me sad, but I figure it's prolly best cause they would ruin that too. Plus who knows if Ethan Peck can even sing or has the hotness to pull it off.
